BWS #6 – How to move forward as a Solopreneur

In today’s issue, I’m going to share how I worked with one client for 3 weeks. During that time, we were able to find resolutions to her problems.

Together, we discussed the areas she was having trouble with. I devised the proper plan to take her from unorganized to organized. From no automation to implementing automation within her business.

Unfortunately, most people think they can make these changes themselves. Which may be accurate, but they never finish the projects. Then their business stays how it was before, unorganized with no automation.

The Problem

Like any area in life, we get to that point; I have had that moment. This was the case for this client. I am going to let her words do the talking for the moment. This is what she mentioned to me while we were working together.

I think it would be good to understand how to move forward and utilize automation, project management, and finance solutions. This is not my strong suit, and an in-depth explanation would be appreciated.”

So many solopreneurs have the same problems. You cannot flourish in your zone of genius because your business captures you. We all have things that we are good at and things that cause us pain. Are you able to identify those?

If you can identify your weaknesses within your business, you can start to take action. By seeking help and outsourcing the areas, you need help with.

The Solution/Results

We connected via Linked and had 2 calls together. A discovery call and then our 90-minute strategy session. After the second call, I went right to work implementing the areas below.

CRM via Dubsado: When we started, there was no CRM. I added Dubsado to start a client-tracking process. There were no formal contracts between her current clients. The time she would get paid was sporadic. This is not a place to be for any business owner. The below was added to her account:

  • Contract
  • Branded
  • Email signature
  • Client portal customized
  • Added 2 current clients to the client portal

Project management system via Asana: How are you tracking client deadlines? There are better ideas than tracking via text message, Slack, or email. A project management system like Asana can help you hit your target deadlines. I implemented a PM system in Asana and added her current clients and the projects they were working on. From now on, you can see a due date for any project.

Business bank account: Our personal and business bank accounts should be separated. No questions asked. If you have these set up together, you are making some big mistakes within your business. My client had hers together. I had advised her to separate the two, which is precisely what she did. Now, she will have her business money in an account separate from her business. She then can pay herself and pay her expenses with those funds.

Financial spreadsheet: Tracking income and expenses becomes very difficult if you have your personal and business bank accounts together, as I mentioned above. I built a custom financial spreadsheet to track yearly income and expenses.

Quickbooks is also recommended to have in your business so you can track monthly income and expenses. Having a bookkeeper handling your QB is a wise investment on your part.

Payment processor via Stripe: Now that we have a business bank and Dubsado, we can combine all three. Stripe connects to the bank account, and then Dubsado connects to stripe. If you get to this point in your business, you can set up invoices within Dubsado and send them to your clients. A one-time invoice or monthly recurring invoice. This will take the guesswork out of how you will be paid.

Does This Sound Like You?

As I mentioned above, this was a 3-week project with my client from start to finish. It doesn’t matter if your business is in the beginning or has been going on for years. These same steps and processes need to be implemented into your business. Doing so will get you on the fast track to being better organized. The process of bringing systems and automation into your business.

As soon as you are ready, there is a way to work with me:

  1. Organize and Automate your business today
  2. Dubsado setup
